Hanoi (VNA) -
Vietnam’s fruit andvegetable businesses should eye on organic products for export to the Europeanmarket, experts said at a workshop in Hanoi on October 11.

According to Secretary General of the VietnamFruits and Vegetables Association Nguyen Huu Dat, Vietnam’s export of fruitsand vegetables is forecast to increase in the coming time.

Besides major markets such as the US, Australia, and Japan, businesses are seeking to make inroads into the EU given itspotential.

Statistics showed that Vietnam earned more than2.6 billion USD from shipping fruits and vegetables abroad, representing ayear-on-year increase of 44.2 percent.

The EU is evaluated a promising market forVietnamese fruit and vegetable, however, it has strict requirements on foodsafety. Therefore, the export turnover of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables tothe EU only stood at 100 million USD.

The regulations on pesticide residues in fruits andvegetables are one of the factors to hinder Vietnamese businesses to penetrateinto the market, Dat said.

He suggested businesses improving cultivation inthe net houses to achieve higher technical economic efficiency.

Apart from food security, products must meet theHazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and GlobalGAP standards onmanufacturing, processing and packaging, he added.

Ruggero Malossi, a specialist of the EuropeanTrade Policy and Investment Support Project (EU-MUTRAP), said the EU limits theuse of some chemicals to ensure food safety and avoid environmental losses, soimported products must be controlled.

Expertsproposed ministries and departments soon build proper strategies for each marketand facilitate the transport of such competitive fruits as dragon fruits, longans, rambutans, grapefruits and mangoes.

Businesses should concentrate on areas todevelop key export products while investing in phytosanꩵitary treatment, preservation and deep procesꦕsing technologies to meet requirements of foreignmarkets.-VNA
