The Philippines will impose a 12% value-added tax on digital services offered by tech giants such as Amazon, Netflix, Disney, and Alphabet, in a move that aims to level the playing field with domestic players, the country’s Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) announced on October 2.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has said in order to help control consumer prices, the Government aims to increase domestic food production and promptly enhance the supply through imports. This means priority will be given to the development of the agriculture sector, which has long been neglected.

The death toll from Storm Nalgae has risen to 98, while 63 people remain missing and 69 others are injured, according to the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
