Front leader gives Tet gifts to poor households in Son La

SonLa (VNA) – President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) CentralCommittee Nguyen Thien Nhan visited and presented gifts to poor households andwelfare policy beneficiaries in the northern mountainous province of Son La onJanuary 14-15, ahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Talkingwith local residents in Chieng Co commune, Nhan said he was delighted to know that the commune has established a coffee cultivation cooperative, saying thatit is a right direction and the locality needs to build an irrigation system toincrease coffee output.

Thesame day, the Front leader held a working session with the provincial PartyCommittee and VFF chapter to discuss the development of agriculturalcooperatives in tandem with sustainable farm production and consumption.

Hespoke highly of the province’s strategic determination to shift to fruitcultivation and expand cooperative models, suggesting that Son La should seek high-qualityseedling suppliers and establish a cooperatives alliance which is responsiblefor supplying fertilisers and plant varieties.

Nhanalso asked the provincial agriculture and rural development sector to train acontingent of cooperative leaders, and described Son La as a promising destinationto host a conference on building new-style cooperatives hosted by the VFFCentral Committee in the coming time.

Speakingat the event, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Hoang Van Chat said SonLa currently records 261 cooperatives, including 30 involved in fruit treegrowing and 16 others in vegetable cultivation; and 18 farm produce production gand consumption chains.

Asmany as 41 firms and cooperatives with 84 products have met Vietgap food safetystandards.
Thisyear, one of Son La’s priority tasks is to grow more fruit trees on sloppingland areas, launching Vietgap production and consumption chains, and buildingbrands for its products, he said.

Alsoon January 14, Nhan attended a get-together of border guard officers, soldiersand residents in border areas of Moc Chau district.

Theorganisers presented gifts to 300 poor households, 1,000 gift packages and 50scholarships to needy students worth a total of more than 500 million VND (21,700USD).

Earlier,the Border Guard High Command coordinated with the Long Sap Border Station tohold cultural and sport events, folk games and glutinous rice cake wrappingcompetition in the lead up to Tet./.
