Mekong Delta localities launch mass release of shrimp, fish fry

Tonnes of young shrimps and fish have recently been released to the wild across the Mekong Delta region for the restocking of marine resources.

Can Tho (VNA) – Tonnes of youngshrimps and fish have recently been released to the wild across the MekongDelta region for the restocking of marine resources.

On March 31, Soc Trang province’sDepartment of Agriculture and Rural Development released 3.5 million Asiantiger shrimp fry into the sea at the Tran De fishing port.

On April 1, Ben Tre released nearly onemillion tonnes of fish fry and 100,000 breeding prawns into the local Ba LaiRiver in Chau Thanh district.

The provincial fisheries association hasalso required local fishermen to halt all fishing activities between April 1and 7. 

The same day, a fish release campaign waslaunched in Can Tho City.

According to Vice Chairman of the municipalPeople’s Committee Dao Anh Dung, the campaign was expected to set free threetonnes of Siamese giant carps at nine locations in nine local districts. Thefigure was 6 times higher than that of 2013.

Having high economic value, Siamese giantcarps’ population has been severely depleted in recent years.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
