Paper factory pollution under scrutiny

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has ordered the Vietnam Environment Administration to collaborate with Hau Giang province to investigate media reports about environmental pollution caused by Vietnam Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited after its waste treatment plant developed problems.

Hau Giang (VNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resourceshas  ordered the Vietnam EnvironmentAdministration to collaborate with Hau Giang province to investigate mediareports about environmental pollution caused by Vietnam Lee & Man PaperManufacturing Limited after its waste treatment plant developed problems.

Media reports this week said that a trial run of the plant at the company’sunder-construction factory in the Mekong Delta province’s Chau Thanh districtcaused discharge of untreated wastewater on March 7, affecting nearbyhouseholds.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said theprovince’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment and other localagencies had been told to co-ordinate with the ministry’s inspection team toinvestigate and publish details of possible pollution.

He also instructed the company to furnish details of the plant’s trialoperation.

Speaking to Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper, deputy director general of the VEA, HoangVan Thuc, said the ministry sent an inspection team to take charge ofmonitoring and evaluating the improvements to be made to the treatment plantnext week.

The plant’s trials should be done within the factory, and no wastewatershould be released into the environment, he said.

Last December the VEA allowed the factory to begin testing the treatmentplant for the first time, but then stopped it due to pollution.

The 1.2 billion USD factory, situated in the Phu Huu A Industrial Clusteralong the Hau River, saw work begin in 2007, but completion has been delayedseveral times.

It is designed to manufacture 330,000 tonnes of pulp and 420,000 tonnes ofpackaging paper a year.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, tre🐼atment efforts🌌

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public.
