Vietnam, Japan seek closer parliamentary cooperation

Tokyo (VNA) – A delegation of Vietnam’s National Assembly Standing Committee, led by Chairwoman of the NA’s Committee for Deputy Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hai, paid a working visit to Japan from August 28–30.
While there, they had meetings with representatives of the upper and lower houses, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and Saitama prefecture council.

For her part, Hai expressed appreciation for Japan’s support in promoting bilateral cooperation in recent times.
She emphasised that the cooperation agreement between the Vietnamese NA and the Japanese House of Councillors (upper house) signed in December 2024 provides a key foundation for enhancing bilateral and multilateral legislative cooperation. She proposed expanding delegation exchanges, particularly among young and female parliamentarians, leveraging MPs as bridges for local and business cooperation, and strengthening collaboration between specialised committees, especially in areas like election and organisation.
The two sides agreed that parliamentary cooperation is a key channel within the Vietnam – Japan comprehensive strategic partnership, contributing to strengthening political trust, promoting people-to-people exchanges, and expanding cooperation across areas.
Meanwhile, officials from the Japanese ministry introduced their electoral system and shared experiences on candidate eligibility and support measures during elections.
Hai emphasised the importance of sharing election experience, showing her hope for valuable exchanges with Japan in training to improve the capacity, skills, and expertise of officials serving election work, and applying digital transformation in the work.
On August 28, the delegation visited Saitama prefecture, where the two sides affirmed that local-level cooperation is an important channel for promoting economic, trade, and labour cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Japan.

PM Pham Minh Chinh expressed his hope that Japanese enterprises will continue standing side by side with Vietnam on the development path, thereby benefiting the two business communities, both countries, and their peoples.
The robust collaboration between the Vietnamese National Assembly and Japan’s National Diet, particularly between the two nations’ parliamentary friendship groups, is a hallmark of bilateral relations, contributing to deepening the Vietnam-Japan comprehensive strategic partnership, said NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man.
Nearly two years after the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world, the Vietnam-Japan relationship has made comprehensive progress across all fields.
On September 16, at talks with First Vice President of the Belgian Senate Andries Gryffoy, NA Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to developing friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Belgium.
