Vietnam, Micronesia wish to reinforce parliamentary ties

Doha (VNA) – Chairwoman of the Vietnamese NationalAssembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met with Speaker of the Congress of the FederatedStates of Micronesia Wesley W. Simina in Doha, Qatar, on April 7.

The two parliamentary leaders expressed theirdelight at meeting each other again on the sidelines of the 140th Assembly ofthe Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-140) after the Micronesian Speaker paid anofficial visit to Vietnam in June 2018.

Simina said his country always wishes to enhancecooperation with Vietnam, adding that it recently adopted a resolutionsupporting Vietnam’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the United NationsSecurity Council for 2020-2021.

The two sides noted with satisfaction that thetwo parliaments have established and developed bilateral relations with goodoutcomes while promoting exchanges and coordination at multilateral forums likethe IPU and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF).

They affirmed the willingness to strengthencooperation between the two legislative bodies.

Since the bilateral diplomatic relationship wasset up in 1995, Vietnam and Micronesia have enjoyed strides in their ties. Thetwo countries have carried out cooperation activities in multiple spheres,especially maritime environment, climate change, agriculture, seafood farming,and tourism.

During the Micronesian Speaker’s visit toVietnam in June 2018, he and Chairwoman Ngan discussed many concrete measuresto tap into bilateral cooperation potential, including increasing delegationexchanges at all levels, boosting people-to-people exchange, setting upcooperation and negotiation mechanisms, and foster the trade of agricultureproducts, consumer goods and agricultural machinery. These measures are beingactively implemented by both parliaments.-VNA
