Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam importedvegetables and fruits worth of more than 1 billion USD in the first eightmonths of 2017, a year-on-year increase of 94 percent.
During theperiod, Thailand remained Vietnam’s largest import market, accounting for 62percent of total vegetable and fruit import value, followed by China, with 16percent.
In spite of being an agricultural country that exports its green produce acrossthe wဣorld, Vietnam has spent a huge amount of money importing vegetables andfruits.
The country’sfruit and vegetable imports from Thailand rose by 3.2 times from last year,while its imports from the Indian and New Zealand markets were 2.2 times and 2times higher, according the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The fruitsimported include apple, orange, pear, kiwi, cherry (from New Zealand andAustralia), mango and custard apple (from Thailand). Vietnam earned nearly 879 million USD from exporting fruits and vegetables in the first half of this year, a 28.41 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Vietnam gained a 33 percent year-on-year increase in the fruit and vegetable export value to reach 1.17 billion USD for the first half of 2016, officials said.
