An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the central Philippine island of Leyte on July 10, which was also hit by a 6.5-magnitude quake last week, killing at least two people and injuring 72 others.

Hanoi (VNA) – An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scaleshook the central Philippine island of Leyte on July 10, which was also hit bya 6.5-magnitude quake last week, killing at least two people and injuring 72others.

According to the United States Geological Survey,the earthquake occurred near Ormoc city, home to some 200,000 people, at adepth of about 12.7 km.

The Philippines lies on the so-called Ring ofFire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many quakes and volcanic eruptionsoccur. In October 2013, the country was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake that leftmore than 220 people dead.

In February 2017, a 6.5-magnitude quake killedeight people and left more than 250 injured outside the southern city ofSurigao.-VNA
