Anti-terrorism drill held to protect oil, gas project

An anti-terrorism drill which aims to protect important oil and gas projects was held in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on August 16.

The drill was co-organised by the Ministry of PublicSecurity, the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group and Ba Ria-Vung Tauprovince.

It simulated the occurrence of a fight when watchmen ofthe Phu My Fertiliser Plant prevented some farmers’ cultivation fromviolating the gas pipeline corridor.

The incident was suddenlydriven in a dangerous direction when some reactionaries mingled androused thousands of people to raise banners and overrun the plant.

At the risk of a riot, the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Steering Committee onAnti-Terrorism directed the provincial police to block key roads andreport to the Public Security Ministry for further guidance andcoordination forces.

After detecting the ringleaders, disguisedpolice officers captured them while mobile forces isolated and separatedthe crowd to detain the remaining extremists, who later were told todisperse.

At the appearance of 10 armed terrorists who killedsome watchmen and held the plant employees, a specialised unit workedwith authorised provincial agencies to seize the terrorists, rescuehostages, defuse bombs, extinguish fires, provide first aid, revive thefactory’s operations and stabilise local security and order.

Anumber of experiences were learnt from the drill, which will raiserelevant units’ capacity to prevent terrorism and sabotage as well asactivities of criminals and hostile forces.-VNA
