Hai Phong (VNA) – Two more artesianwells have just been found in Bach Long Vy island district in the port city ofHai Phong by the Northern Division of Water Resources Planning andInvestigation.

Two drill holes detected flowing artesianwater of 75 cubic metres per day.

A water treatment station has been built toprovide water for island citizens.

Bach Long Vy island district, about 100kmoffshore, is populated by some 1,000 people and more than 2,000 people at peakduring storms. The population needs about 210 cubic metres of water per day.

Over the years, they have suffered fromcontinuous water shortages. They mostly rely on the two 80-metre deep concentratedwells, each with a daily capacity of 15 cubic metres.

The now four water wells can supply acombination of 90 cubic metres per day, leaving island residents still 120cubic metres short of what they need.

In dry season in 2017, island people had tobuy water for 50,000 – 100,000 VND per cubic metre. Offshore fishermen even hadto buy drinking water at prices double or triple those on the island.

Secretary of the Bach Long Vy districtPeople’s Committee Tran Quang Tuong said, the water reservoirs, with a combinedcapacity of 48,000 cubic metres, once completed in 2018, will meet the demandof local residents.

The district will collaborate with the HaiPhong Water Supply Company to build a water treatment plant on the island toimprove the water quality for district residents, Tuong said.-VNA
