ASEAN members boost energy cooperation

The 32nd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) adopted a joint statement on strengthening cooperation among state members for sustainable energy development in Vientiane, Laos, on September 23.

In the 20-point statement, the ministersreiterated the need to make concerted efforts to develop and userenewable energy resources and build power integration networks tosafeguard the sustainability of energy resources.

Earlier, they discussed reports on the energy cooperation in ASEANbetween 2013 and 2014, particularly initial outcomes in realising theASEAN Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation (APAEC) in the 2010-2015period and the development of the 2016-2020 APAEC.

They hailed the initiative to carry out the power integration project,which is being piloted by Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, andSingapore.

Delegates also expressed their hope toincrease cooperation with international partners to address such issuesas increasing demand for electricity, mitigating greenhouse gasemissions, and ensuring nuclear safety in the region.

This year’s event is following the theme “Power Integration for ASEAN Prosperity”.

The next meeting will be held in Malaysia in 2015.-VNA

Energy Asia 2025 kicks off in Malaysia

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted that the Asia-Pacific region accounted for half of global energy consumption and 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. Despite this, regional countries, including eight of ten ASEAN member states, remain committed to climate goals, including net-zero emissions and tripling global renewable capacity by 2030.
