Hanoi (VNA) – Construction of the Vietnam Bear Sanctuary – Phase 2 in theTam Dao National Park of Vinh Phuc northern province has been completed, announcedthe Animals Asia on April 19.
Coveringa total area of more than 5,600 square metres, the 10 billion VND (nearly440,000 USD) project was implemented by the Animals Asia and the Vietnam ForestProtection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
It includes two seminatural outdoor enclosures linked with two double bearhouses, each containing two rows of conjoined concrete dens, as well asrehabilitation areas for special-care bears.
Thesanctuary, the first of its kind in Vietnam, will be open for students andvisitors to study bears’ habitats, thus raising their awareness of protectingthe species.
The Animals Asia will take care of the bears and operate the rescue centre for15 years before handing over it to the Vietnamese side.
Vietnam is the first country to prohibit illegalbear-keeping for gall, showing the Government’s determination and strategic visionto stop this activity.
According to the latest statistics from the VietnamForest Protection Department, there are about 1,245 Asian black bears are beingheld in captivity in 430 bear farms nationwide.
The Animals Asia startedbear rescue activities in Vietnam in 2006 and is committed to caring forrescued bears. As many as 177 bears were rescued, including 161 ones currently living in thesanctuary.
Theorganisation has worked together with authorised agencies and forest protectionsector to save bears and disseminate bear protection laws. It also held severalprogrammes on animal protection for students.-VNA
The Animals Asia on September 12 announced that it has received a Malayan sun bear and two monkeys that were caged as pets in Buon Ma Thuot city, the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.
The Animals Asia said it has received two Asian black bears handed over by an individual in An Khe town in Gia Lai, raising the number of bears saved by the organisation in Vietnam to 177.
