Bhutanese King, Queen start state visit to Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) - King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck of Bhutan arrived in Hanoi on August 18, beginning their five-day state visit to Vietnam, at the invitation of State President Luong Cuong and his spouse.
Welcoming the delegation at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi were Minister of Ethnic and Religious Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong, among others.
Accompanying the King and the Queen are Most Venerable Sangay Dorji, Abbot of the Central Monastic Body; D.N. Dhungyel, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade; and Namgyal Dorji, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment; among others.
This will be the first state visit to Vietnam by the King and Queen of Bhutan since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2012, marking an important milestone in bilateral relations.
Vietnam and Bhutan enjoy a strong friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, Vietnam has consistently valued its relations with Bhutan, regarding it as a pioneer in pursuing green growth and maintaining high “happiness” indicators. Meanwhile, Bhutan considers Vietnam a priority partner for strengthening bilateral relations and is keen to learn from Vietnam’s development experience.
ꩲ According to spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang, during the trip, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is scheduled to hold talks with State President Cuong; meet with Party General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man; as well as attend other important activities./.
Building on their strong friendship, the state visit to Vietnam by the King and the Queen from August 18 to 22 reflects Bhutan’s high regard for its friendship and cooperation with Vietnam, as well as Vietnam’s growing role and position in the region.
The visit will be made at the invitation of Vietnamese State President Luong Cuong and his spouse, according to an announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Hai believed that the visit would usher in a new phase of cooperation, making the Vietnam – Bhutan friendship more practical and effective for the benefit of their people, while contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond.
Chien noted that the upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025 was a historic milestone, reflecting the strong political will of both sides to advance cooperation in a more reliable, practical, and effective manner. Defence and security cooperation is a key pillar of this partnership, he said.
The elections of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 tenure will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026. These are major political events of great significance for the country and each locality as they will be organised 40 years after “Doi moi” (renewal).
The two sides also explored potential areas for further cooperation, including logistics, military medicine, search and rescue operations, and UN peacekeeping. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to coordinating closely with and supporting each other in international forums, particularly within the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).
The Party chief described the bills as major, complex issues demanding brainpower to address real-world obstacles and ensure legal consistency, with the goal of unlocking resources and turning institutions and laws into a competitive edge for economic growth.
