Cambodia: CNRP, CPP share power in National Assembly

Vice President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party(CNRP) Kem Sokha will take up a seat as first Vice President of theNational Assembly (NA) in its fifth tenure.

The news wasreleased after the CNRP and the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)reached an agreement to end the year-long political deadlock followingthe national election in July 2013, at their high-top talks on July 22.

Thetwo parties concurred to share power in the legislative body with theruling CPP holding the positions of the President and the second VicePresident while the CNRP taking up the position of the first VicePresident. Each party will hold the chair of five committees in the NA.

In a move to facilitate the implementation of theagreement, eight CNRP members, who were arrested on charge of holding aviolent protest on July 15, were released. The Freedom Park in PhnomPenh was also reopened to the public.

According to CNRPspokesperson Yim Sovann, 55 members of the opposition party whosucceeded in the general election in last July, will take an oath at theRoyal Palace in the presence of King Norodom Sihamoni on July 24.-VNA
