Cambodia's parliament on October 25 passed constitutional amendments barring holders of the country's top positions, including prime minister, upper and lower house speakers, and head of the constitutional council, from being citizens of other countries.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia's parliament on October25 passed constitutional amendments barring holders of the country's top positions,including prime minister, upper and lower house speakers, and head of theconstitutional council, from being citizens of other countries.

At least 110 Cambodian lawmakers voted in favor of the draftat a plenary session.

The new law bans the Prime Minister, the presidents of theSenate and National Assembly, and the president of the Constitutional Councilfrom holding any other citizenship other than Cambodian to avoid foreigninterference.

The revised constitution will need to be reviewed by theSenate and the Constitutional Council before being submitted to King NorodomSihamoni for approval./.
