Cambodia voters elect communal people’s council members

About 7.8 million of Cambodian voters across the country cast their ballots on June 4 to select 11,572 members to communal People’s Councils in 1,646 communes and wards nationwide.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – About 7.8 million of Cambodian votersacross the country cast their ballots on June 4 to select 11,572 members to communalPeople’s Councils in 1,646 communes and wards nationwide.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, leader of the CambodianPeople’s Party (CPP) and his spouse cast their votes in Ta Khmau commune inKandal province, while President of the opposite Cambodia National Rescue Party(CNRP) joined the election in Mean Chhay district in Phnom Penh.

Twelve parties competed in the election whose the first editionwas held in 2002, but only CPP and CNRP had representatives running in alllocalities.

According to the spokesperson of Cambodia’s Ministry of HomeAffair General Khieu Sopheak, about 40,000 police were deployed to ensuresecurity in election posts, while nearly 7,500 watchdogs monitored the election.

The Cambodia’s National Election Council will announceinitial results in late June 4 or June 5. Official results will be revealedafter one month.-VNA
