Cambodian authorities urged to gear up for Mekong flooding

Authorities at all levels in Cambodia have been ordered to prepare for Mekong flooding that is forecast to hit some provinces in the coming days.
Hanoi (VNA) – Authorities at all levels inCambodia have been ordered to prepare for Mekong flooding that is forecast tohit some provinces in the coming days.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said onSeptember 4 that the country is suffering from the impact of three naturalphenomena, namely a depression, tropical storm Kajiki and southwest monsoon,which has caused heavy rainfall in some provinces.

The PM noted according to the weather forecast,the water levels in the Mekong River in Stung Treng, Kratie and Kampong Champrovinces will rise higher than the alarm levels, starting from September 8 to10.

Therefore, ministries and institutions concernedas well as local authorities have to take necessary measures to prepare againstthe disaster, he said, adding that saving people’s lives and maximally reducingdamage to their properties must be the most important tasks.

On September 3, the country’s Ministry of WaterResources and Meteorology also warned of heavy rainfall and strong wind at seafrom September 3 to 10, and advised maritime travelers and fishermen to beextra-vigilant in order to avoid any possible dangers. It said for coastalprovinces, especially Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong, there will bemoderate-to-heavy rainfall.-VNA
