Hanoi (VNA) - The Appeal Court of Cambodia upheld the decision of a lower court toextend a further six-month pre-trial detention for former opposition leader KemSokha on March 27.
Appeal Court spokesman Touch Tharith said the Appeal Court rejected Kem Sokha'sappeal and upheld the decision of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to extend hisdetention by an additional six months.
On March 5, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court extended the pre-trial detention ofKem Sokha, 64, president of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party(CNRP), by another six months.
Kem Sokha was arrested on September 3, 2017 and charged with treason forconspiring with a foreign power in an attempt to overthrow the government. Ifconvicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.
In mid-November, the CNRP was dissolved by the Supreme Court and 118 seniorparty members were banned from joining politics for five years.-VNA
