Canada helps Myanmar in climate change adaptation, social development

Hanoi (VNA) – Canada will provide 20 million CAD (14million USD) to help Myanmar implement two initiatives on climate changeadaptati✱on and social development in the next five years.

The announcement was made by Minister of International Developmentand La Francophonie of Canada Marie-Claude Bibeau at a meeting with MyanmarState Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is on a visit to Canada from June 5-9. Canada wants to help promote prosperity and benefits for the mostvulnerable in Myanmar, especially women, poor farmers and young people, said Bibeau. She added that the Canada’s support will help enhance the Myanmargovernment’s capacity to respond to natural disasters. Previously, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged apeace and humanitarian aid worth 8.8 million CAD (6 million USD) to theSoutheast Asian country. To date, Canada has provided over 95 million CAD in officialdevelopment assistance for Myanmar. The two countries signed a memorandum ofunderstanding on effective development cooperation in February this year.-VNA
