Central Highlands: high coffee prices offset declining output

A significant increase in coffee prices in the Central Highlands has helped offset a decline in output, according to the Steering Committee for the Central Highlands Region.

Dak Lak (VNA) – Asignificant increase in coffee prices in the Central Highlands has helpedoffset a decline in output, according to the Steering Committee for the CentralHighlands Region.

The committee said a longdrought significantly reduced the 2016-2017 coffee harvest.

For the whole region, the outputof 135,000 hectares of coffee hit by drought fellby up to 50 percent, while another7,894 hectares died of drought.

DakLak, a major coffee producerof the country, has nearly 69,000 hectares of coffee hit by drought, of which5,570 hectares suffer from complete loss.

However, coffee bean priceshavebeen at a five-year peak, increasing from 41,000VND to 42,000VND per kilogramme,bringing goodprofits to farmer households.

According to the steeringcommittee, the Central Highlands region has a total coffee area of 573,400hectares, of which 532,499 hectares have been in harvest, with an estimatedoutput of over 1 million tonnes of coffee beans.

Under a draft to amend and supplement the Government's Decree 125/2020/ND-CP on administrative sanctions for violations of tax and invoice regulations, the Ministry of Finance has proposed classifying the failure to issue invoices into five different levels. Infraction levels will correspond to fines of 1 million VND to 80 million VND, depending on the nature and number of invoicing violations.
