Chinese national jailed for theft onboard Vietnam Airlines plane

Hanoi(VNA) – Gui Xing Liang, 47, a Chinese national, was sentenced to two years inprison by the Hanoi People’s Court on April 25 for theft onboard a VietnamAirlines flight last November.

The incidentoccurred on flight VN170 travelling from Da Nang city to Hanoi at noon onNovember 17 last year.

During the journey,two passengers noticed Gui moving and rummaging through an overhead blacksuitcase that appeared not to belong to him.

They informed thechief steward of his suspicious behavior who then looked for the owner of thesuitcase. They could not find the owner Nguyen Van Thieng, from Nam Tu Liemdistrict, Hanoi until the aircraft landed at Noi Bai International Airport.

Thieng was asked tocheck his luggage and discovered 4,000 USD and 50 million VND in cash wasmissing.

The Chinese man was detainedby the crew at the aircraft door where he was caught attempting to pull wads ofUSD and VND bills out of his pockets and drop them on the floor.

Gui had two previousconvictions for theft in China.-VNA
