Tokyo (VNA) - The Vietnamese Embassy and the union of Vietnamese associations in Japan are exerting citizen protection efforts after two Vietnamese workers went missing while fishing off the coast of Ibaraki prefecture on October 12.

Nguyen Hong Son, President of the union, on October 15 met with leading officials of Sakamoto Zaimoku Konpo Co., Ltd. and representatives from the Hikari Kyodo Kumiai union to gather information on the case.

Previously, Son and Phan Tien Hoang, First Secretary and head of the Labour Management Office at the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, along with Vu Tien Han, head of the embassy’s consular section, also held discussions with the Kamisu city police on the incident.

During the meeting, they requested information from the Japanese police to facilitate their citizen-protecting effort.

Information from a Japanese investigation agency goes that around 7.30pm on October 12, three Vietnamese men set out from their dormitory in Kasumigaura city to go fishing in Kamisu city, approximately 60km away.

On their way to the fishing ground, they met three other Vietnamese workers who reside and work in Ryugasaki city, also in Ibaraki prefecture.

While making their way to the coastal embankment for fishing, four were knocked into the sea by waves. Rescue teams managed to save two of them, who displayed signs of hypothermia but were conscious and not in life-threatening condition. Unfortunately, two victims remain missing.

ꦯ According to the Kamisu city police, search operations are set to continue for one week. The operation will involve two helicopters, a local coast guard vessel, and dozens of rescue personnel./.
