Corruption continues to be one of the most pressing matters in society and a threat to socio-political stability in Vietnam, as corruption-related cases have led to the loss of over 950 billion VND (42.27 million USD) and nearly 9,900 hectares of land so far this year. The information was revealed on September 11 at the National Assembly Committee for Judicial Affairs’ meeting to review a Government report on corruption prevention and combat.
According to the report, the inspection sector has conducted 6,515 administrative and 116,334 specialised inspections since the beginning of this year, through which it proposed reclaiming 52.2 trillion VND (2.33 billion USD) and 1,788 hectares of land while reprimanding 1,945 collectives and 14,339 individuals. Ninety percent of complaints and petitions filed during the reviewed period, or 35,555 cases, have been settled. From 2011-2015, the inspection sector uncovered a number of economic violation cases involving a combined 208.5 trillion VND (9.17 billion USD), according to the Government Inspectorate.
Over the past 5 years, the sector has focused inspections on key and sensitive fields of concern to the public. Large-scale inspections have been conducted involving land use, management and planning, school upgrades, investment management and State budget use. As a result, the sector has revoked 19,230 hectares of land and recalled 119.4 trillion VND (5.25 billion USD). Some 441 corruption-related cases have been detected. This year, the National Assembly and Government continue to steer the implementation of laws and policies in line with 2013 Constitution regulations while guiding the management and reform of administrative procedures in taxation, customs and social insurance in order to improve the business environment, ensure the interests of labourers and increase national competitiveness.-VNA
