Denmark shares experience in building green, sustainable cities

Vietnamese and Danish experts and architects gathered at a seminar themed “Danish Week-Sustainable City Solutions” in Hanoi on December 12, to share experience in urban planning policies and solutions to the development of green and sustainable cities.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese and Danish experts and architectsgathered at a seminar themed “Danish Week-Sustainable City Solutions” in Hanoion December 12, to share experience in urban planning policies and solutions tothe development of green and sustainable cities.

The week-long event was held as an initiative of the Danish Embassy in Vietnamand co-organised by the Hanoi-based University of Civil Engineering.

Denmark is among the world’s leading nations in terms of green technology andgreen growth is an important area in the comprehensive cooperation agreementbetween the Vietnamese and Danish Governments, said Danish Ambassador toVietnam Charlotte Laursen.

She said that the seminar would create an opportunity for both sides toexchange ideas and measures to build green and sustainable cities.

Meanwhile, Bo Monsted, Commercial Counsellor at the Danish Embassy, noted thatlike Vietnam, Denmark is also facing numerous challenges such as flood, saltwater intrusion, land erosion and poor quality of surface water.

To address these issues, the Danish Government has paid attention to themanagement of water, flood-prone areas, urban drainage systems, and water quality.

Sharing a successful story in urban planning of Aarhus city, head of the city’sTechnique and Environment Department Mogens Bjorn Nielsen said that Aarhus’smaster plan in 2017 focus on the sustainability of ecology, society andeconomy.

New constructed areas in the city are the mixture of various kinds of houses,he said, adding that Aerhus is now a green city with natural diversity and morewater surface.

An exhibition open to the public from December 12-17 at Ly Thai To Square willshowcase the best sustainable architecture designs and city developmentprojects from Denmark.

Another event held within the framework of the week is the final round of thecompetition “Raising Awareness on Green City Solutions in Vietnam”, where thebest ideas on ensuring greener and cleaner will be awarded.

Similar events will be organised in Ho Chi Minh City from December 14-19.-VNA
