Deputy PM instructs post-flood response in central provinces

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on November 20 visited the central province of Quang Nam to inspect activities to surmount the consequences of storms and floods that have recently hit the locality.

According to Standing Vice Chairman of theprovincial People’s Committee Nguyen Quang Ngoc, the recent storm andflooding killed up to six local people, submerged 77,000 houses anddamaged many transport and irrigation facilities. The initial damage isestimated at 112 billion VND (5.26 million USD).

The province also asked the Government to give it 90 billion VND torepair schools and health care facilities, as well as provide seeds forthe upcoming crop and two tonnes of Cloramin B to sterilise watersources.

Deputy PM Hai praised the province’sefforts in flood and storm prevention and control, which he said havecontributed to minimising the disasters’ impacts. He asked the localauthorities to provide sufficient food and hygienic water for people andprevent the spread of diseases occurring after the floods.

He then visited and presented gifts to locals in Dai Loc district, the most vulnerable area to flooding.

The same day, Deputy PM Hai also inspected the post-flood response in the central city of Da Nang .

Da Nang asked the Government to support 100 billion VND for itto repair damaged river embankments, roads and irrigation works.

The Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee has also decided to providerelief aid worth 1.12 billion VND (52,600 USD) for five central andCentral Highlands provinces severely affected by flooding, includingBinh Dinh, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Gia Lai.

The money will be used to buy food, foodstuff and necessities for poor households in these localities.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry andTrade (Vietinbank) has announced it will support 4,000 tonnes of ricefor flood victims in the three central provinces of Quang Ngai, QuangNam and Binh Dinh.-VNA
