Dien Bien reports 8th earthquake in 2019

An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit the northwestern province of Dien Bien on September 5, which is the 8th to happen in the province this year.

Dien Bien (VNA) – An earthquake measuring3.3 on the Richter scale hit the northwestern province of Dien Bien on September 5, which is the 8th to happen in theprovince this year.

Nguyen Thai Son, head of the Dien Bien seismic monitoring station saidthe quake struck at a little after 5 am in Muong Nhe district, about 120 kmfrom the centre of Dien Bien Phu city.

Nodamage is reported so far.

Halfof the tremors this year occurred in Muong Nhe district, and half in Dien BienDong district. The strongest one was measured at 4.0 and the weakest one 2.5.

Earthquakesare normal in the mountainous province of Dien Bien as it is situated on thefault systems of Dien Bien – Lai Chau and Song Ma – Son La.

Over the past 100 years, three big earthquakeswith magnitudes of over 5 on the Richter scale were recorded in Dien Bien, onein 1935 (magnitude of 6.9), another in 1983 (magnitude of 6.7) and the latestin 2001 (magnitude of 5.3). -VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to mon✱itor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramp𓆉s up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
