Dong Nai boosts medical waste treatment efforts

The People’s Committee of the southern province Dong Nai has decided to earmark over 36 billion VND (nearly 1.7 million USD) per year for medical waste collection and treatment.

About 8 tonnes of wasteare discharged every day from local medical establishments, one-fourthsof which is medical waste that needs to be collected and processedappropriately.

Meanwhile, most local hospitals fail to obey regulations in sorting out, transporting and treating medical waste.

Atpresent, there are 10 hospitals in Dong Nai in charge of processingsolid waste from health centres. They are requested to use specialiseddevices and vehicles to transport and dispose medical waste inaccordance with the required standards.

The committee has allowed these hospitals to set up a three-member waste collection, transport and treatment teams.-VNA

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
