ECHO helps storm victims get back to normal

Nearly 40,000 households in eight central and central highland provinces badly affected by the tropical storms Ketsana and Mirinae last year have got their lives back to normal thanks to assistance from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO).

ECHO’svarious projects cost a total of nearly 1.5 million EUR and first wentinto operation last December.

When meeting the press in Hanoi onJune 16, Doan Van Thai, the Vice President and General Secretary ofVietnam ’s Red Cross, stressed that the country sincerely appreciatedthe assistance provided by the ECHO and the support from the French,German and Dutch Red Cross Societies to help the victims of storms andfloods overcome their difficulties and resume their daily activities.

Projectsto deal with the consequences of the storm Ketsana that tore across theprovinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue last Septemberwere carried out in cooperation with the German and Dutch Red Cross. Thesupport included the provision of rice, seeds, fertiliser, waterfilters and cash for victims.

In the five provinces of QuangNgai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Kon Tum and Gia Lai, which were devastated bythe storm Mirinae in November, local residents were provided withsaplings and livestock thanks to the French Red Cross. The aid alsoincluded over 1,000 tonnes of rice for nearly 13,000 households in need./.

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
