Endangered turtle released into ocean near Hue

- Staff of the fishery department in central Thua Thien-Hue provincehas released a green turtle (Chelonia mydas)back into the ocean.

The turtle hasbeen listed as an endangered species in the International Union forConservation of Nature’s red list.
Earlier, trafficpolice found the marine reptile in a local warehouse in the province’s Loc Tiencommune in Phu Loc district when they were passing by the location for duty.

The fishery departmentthen came for checks on the condition of the reptile’s health, before releasingit back to nature.

The turtle weighs12kg and is 50cm long and 40cm wide.

According to thedepartment, they have rescued and released 17 turtles back into the ocean in thepast four years.

Many Vietnamesecook turtles for their meals, particularly the drinkers, since they are unawareof wildlife protection as well as the violation of laws.

Vietnamese lawprohibits hunting, trading, and storing of wild animals. However, theenforcement of the law has yet to be effective, leading to violation of casesaround the country.-VNA

Viet൲nam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
