Expat artist to exhibit Vietnamese-inspired artworks

American expat artist Heather McClellan will present her Vietnamese-inspired lacquer artworks at the Flex exhibition, which opens in Hanoi from April 17.
American expat artist Heather McClellan will present herVietnamese-inspired lacquer artworks at the Flex exhibition, which opensin Hanoi from April 17.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute ofArt – one of the leading art and design schools in the United States –in graphics and illustration, McClellan has continuously explored newtechniques and learned new crafts.

She works well withtraditional media such as ink, pencil, pastels and oils, besidesacrylics, and has also practised diverse methods such as scratch board,lithographs, ceramics and silk screens, as well as lacquer, large muralsand mixed media. She regularly presents women as her subjects and drawsinspiration from a wide variety of cultures.

After moving to Vietnam, McClellan has been studying the local lacquer techniques.

"Flex" will be her first exhibition in Vietnam, and will feature nearly 30 lacquer boards whose primary subjects are women.

For years, the Vietnamese community in many countries rarely had the chance to experience Vietnam’s traditional arts and culture actitivies organized by the Vietnam government, except the annual event “Vietnam Day Abroad” that has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2010.
