First robotically assisted cranial nerve surgery in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – The Ho Chi MinhCity-based Nhan dan (People) 115 Hospital has successfully carried out thefirst robotically assisted brain tumour surgery in Vietnam, said Director ofthe hospital Phan Van Bau on February 17.
The operation was performed under thesupervision of Professor Amin Kassam, Vice President of the United States’Aurora Health Care.
It was conducted on a female patient, aged67, residing in the southern Tay Ninh province. She was admitted to the hospitalfor headache, dysarthria and right limb weakness.
An MRI scan revealed that she had a smalltumour in the left cerebral hemisphere.
The three-member team of the hospitalsuccessfully removed the tumour in the patient’s brain, with the assistance ofthe Modus V Synaptive robot system produced in the US.-VNA
Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi launched its robotic systems for joint and neurological operations on March 1, making it the first medical facility in Vietnam to employ the technology.
Doctors at HCM City’s Binh Dan Hospital have used a robot for the first time in the country for lung cancer surgery, removing suspicious nodules through a small incision instead of a large one and without using mechanical rib spreaders, unlike in the past.
Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City began using robot in cancer surgery on October 23, becoming the third infirmary in Vietnam to apply this technology.
Vietnam now boasts a nationwide healthcare network with 1,665 hospitals, 384 of which are non-public, supported by local commune- and ward-level stations. At the end of 2024, hospital bed capacity reached 34 per 10,000 people, slightly above the global average.
The 56-year-old patient from Quang Tri province was discharged in stable condition as he no longer experienced shortness of breath and was able to walk, move around, and eat normally.
