Hanoi (VNA) - The first surrogate baby was born on January 22 at the Hano🦂i-based Central Maternity Hospital, weighing ꧑3.6 kilograms. ;
Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien, who is also the Director of the National Centre for Reproductive Assistance, carried out the delivery.
The Law on Marriage and Family allowed surrogacy starting January 1, 2015, and since then as many as 65 surrogacy cases have been recorded.
Of these, 46 surrogacy operations have been performed out of 60 applications approved for the procedure by the Central Maternity Hospital . Tu Du Hospital doctors performed 19 procedures out of 33 qualified patients.
According to Tien , Vietnam ’s surrogacy technology has a success rate of 60 to 70 percent.
Only three hospitals meet the technical requirements for surrogacy. They are the Central Maternity Hospital , Tu Du Hospital, and the Hue-based Central Hospital .
Another 10 surrogate babies are expected in the next three months, Tien said.
Surrogacy, aiming at serving a significant humanitarian function, is granted only to couples in which the wives, for health reasons, are physically incapable of having children.
Eligible surrogates must be in their reproductive period and be physically healthy. They must already have at least one child. If they are married, they must also receive their husband's approval before serving as a surrogate.-VNA
