Hai Phong (VNA) - Measures to protect and improve the environment in Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba archipelago were discussed at the second meeting of the Ha Long Bay- Cat Ba Alliance Leadership Co🍎mmittee held in the northern port city ൲of Hai Phong on December 3.
The event was attended by leaders of Hai Phong city and Quang Ninh province, US Deputy Chief of Mission to Vietnam Susan Sutton, representatives from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the French Development Agency (AFD) as well as a line-up of tourism enterprises in Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba archipelago.
Participants gave attention to the design of a set of criteria to grant certificates to tourist vessels operating in Ha Long Bay, which has been recognised as a world heritage site twice, in line with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s standards.
They also raved about necessary policies, finance and techniques to build an efficient waste collection and treatment system to control solid waste from tourism boats.
The Ha Long- Cat Ba Alliance is a three-year initiative (April 2014-June 2017) funded by USAID, aiming to build partnership between the Vietnamese government, businesses and society to expedite actions to improve environmental management and protect the natural integrity of Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba archipelago.
The initiative is led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD).
In 2015, the alliance set up a leadership committee to better off the implementation of granting sustainable tourism certificates to tourist boat businesses while supporting the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation in Ha Long Bay management and recommendation to enlarge the World Heritage Site, comprising Cat Ba archipelago.-VNA
