HCM City (VNA)- The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has agreed to develop a singlecard that will be used for all types of public transport.

Tran Chi Trung, Director of the TransportDepartment’s Public Transportation Management Centre, said that abus-ticket project that began in 2015 with investment of 263 billion VND(almost 11.3 million USD) from a public-private partnership would be replacedby the single-card system.

The bus-ticket project is no longer suited tothe current situation, so it will be stopped for re-evaluation, he said.

In the future, many types of public transit suchas a metro and express bus routes will be operating. If many kinds ofautomatic ticket systems exist, the costs to interlink systems would be toohigh, Trung said.

Automatic ticket machines on some bus routesstill have problems identifying money and types of tickets for differentpassengers, according to transport experts.

As a result, investors have to hire staff tosell and give out tickets on buses.

To overcome these inadequacies, the transportdepartment is considering investment in an automatic payment system that couldbe used for all types of public transport.

In the first phase of the project, 79 billionVND (3.4 million USD) would be spent to buy equipment and build a centralcontrol system linking all other automation payment systems.

The department is conducting researchon interlinked electronic ticket services that use a single cardfor all types of public transport.

By the end of the year, the department willpilot an open payment system that will allow multiple forms ofpayment on some bus routes, Trung said.

In the second phase, the department willcomplete the automatic payment system for its public transit system, andoperate a management centre for transactions and electronic clearing services formulti-modal public transport services.-VNA
