Indonesia aims to earn 6.05 billion USD from fishery exports in 2021

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has set a target of raking in 6.05billion USD from exports of seafood in 2021, more than 1 billion USD higher than previous year, according to Director General of Strengthening theCompetitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products at the Ministry of MarineAffairs and Fisheries Artati Widiarti.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic poses challenges, it alsopresents Indonesia with opportunities amid growing demand for seafood products in the global market.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Indonesia, thecountry’s total export value of marine and fishery commodities hit 1.75 billionUSD in the first quarter of 2021, up 4.15 percent over the same period lastyear.

The trade balance surplus during this periodhad reached 1.59 billion USD, up 3.26 percent, from the figure in thecorresponding period of the previous year.

The increase in export value and trade balancesurplus in the marine and fishery sector became the momentum to achieve theexport target of marine and fishery products of 6.05 billion USD in 2021,Widiarti noted.

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of seafood products, with a total exportturnover of 5.2 billion USD in 2020, of which 4.84 billion USD came from fishconsumption.

It boasts a strong seafood industry, with about 2,191 fish processingunits for export across the country. It exports seafood products to 157countries worldwide./.
