Indonesia calls for Norway’s investment in EV battery industry

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has called on Norway to invest in developing the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry, in the context that the Southeast Asian nation attempts to build a national EV ecosystem.

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has called on Norway to investin developing the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry, in the context thatthe Southeast Asian nation attempts to build a national EV ecosystem.

Marsudi made the suggestion during a meeting with her Norwegian counterpartAnniken Huitfeldt on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum in Oslo on June 12.

The two sides also discussed measures tostrengthen forestry cooperation, and partnership in energy transition.

Indonesia is committed to developing thedownstream EV battery industry and building an electric vehicle ecosystem inthe country. President Joko Widodo has underscored the importance of industrialdownstreaming in a bid to make Indonesia a developed country.

To expedite growth of the electric vehicleecosystem, the Indonesian government has issued an incentive policy by offeringa purchase discount of 7 million Rupiah (around 469 USD) each electricmotorbikes and cars, starting from March 20, 2023.

Norway leads the world in EV adoption. Sincethe 1990s, the Norwegian government has been taking steps to accelerate theprocess of EV transition, and it is one of the first countries to create taxincentives for the environmentally friendly means of transport./.
