Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo recently inaugurated two big copper smelters which are expected to help the nation improve its global mining position.

One of them is a copper refinery facility in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara province, which was developed by PT Amman Mineral at the total cost of 1.4 billion USD. It has a production capacity of processing 900,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year.

Another one is a smelter belonging to PT Freeport in Gresik, East Java province. With an investment of some 3.7 billion USD, the facility is set to process 1.7 million tonnes of copper concentrate brought from Papua.

President Widodo highlighted the importance of industrial downstreaming, describing it as a strategic step to transform꧃ Indonesia into an advanced and independent industrial country in processing its natural resources./.
