Jakarta (VNA)⛦ - The Indonesian government will start imposing a ban on the import of plastic waste from the beginning of next year, according to Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq.

The import ban will apply to all types of plastic waste, including sorted waste.
Indonesia is struggling with a huge volume of waste, which seriously affects the environment and social welfare, Hanif said. The ban will be implemented by establishing a surveillance system and participating in law enforcement efforts, he added. He also urged all importers to actively contribute to solving Indonesia's plastic waste problem from the upstream sector. Data from the National Waste Management Information System showed that in 2023, approximately 38.25% of Indonesia's 38.2 million tonnes of waste remained unmanaged. Food waste comprised the largest portion at 39.65%, followed by plastic waste, which accounted for 19.21% of the total volume./.
