Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister Andi AmranSulaiman has said that the increase in the export of farm commodities, including mangosteen which climbed up three times, has contributed to the localagricultural sector’s achievements.

In 2014, the GDP in the agricultural sector stood at only 900 trillion rupiah (64.3billion USD). But it rose to 1,460 trillion rupiah (104.3 billion USD) in 2018.

In terms of rice production, Indonesiaproduced only 21 million tonnes of rice in 1984 and the figure rose to 33million tonnes, ensuring the domestic rice demand. However, the country importsrice every year for the reserve fund or crop failures.

Currently, the agricultural sector is one of the biggest contributors to theGDP. The rise in the GDP is inseparable from the programme and effort of the governmentand President Joko Widodo, who wants to see farmers lead a prosperous life andtheir income continuing to increase. - VNA
