Malaria cases drop 70.6 percent after nearly a decade

Nearly two thirds of the cases (over 64.6 percent) were in thethree provinces of Binh Phuoc (southeasternregion) and Gia Lai and Dak Lak (both in the Central Highlands). Vietnam is steadily working towards the strategic target ofcompletely eradicate malaria by 2030, Deputy Director of the National Instituteof Malariology, Parasitology, and Entomology (NIMPE) NguyenQuang Thieu said. He stressed that the national strategy on malaria preventionand elimination for 2011-2020 is designed to ensure that all people have accessto early diagnosis and prompt and effective treatment at public and privatehealth facilities, and full protection for people living in regions with riskof malaria. Delegates to the conference looked into outstanding problemsand challenges in malaria control work in border areas. Among solutions put forth at the conference, localauthorities, organisations and communities are urged to allocate sufficientfunding and actively participate in prevention activities. The delegates alsorecommended strict disease supervision of immigrants, especially those who regularlystay in forests or return from malaria hot spots. The conference agreed on the need to call for assistancefrom foreign organisations to ensure constant funding for malaria controlwork.-VNA
Vietnam has been making great strides to move from malaria control towards elimination of the disease, but increasing malaria in disadvantaged areas is threatening the country’s overall progress.
The southern province of Binh Phuoc has recorded 973 malaria cases in the first half of the year, up by 66 percent year-on-year, including one death, reported by the provincial Department of Health on July 16.
