KualaLumpur (VNA) – The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddinAl-Mustafa Billah Shah, was sworn in as the 16th King of Malaysia at a ceremonyheld on January 31.

SultanAbdullah was elected king by the Conference of Rulers on January 24, replacingSultan Muhammad V, who resigned on January 6 after over two years on thethrone.

Alsoat the swearing-in ceremony, televised and attended by Prime Minister MahathirMohamad, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, who was elected deputy king,also took the oath of office.

Bothof their terms last for five years.

Malaysiahas a constitutional monarchy, in which the national throne changes hands everyfive years among royal rulers of the country’s nine states. -VNA
