Immigration Director-General Mustafar Ali said the figure exceeded thedepartment’s initial target of 850 operations per month.

Mustafar said last month, 1,327 operations were conducted to track downemployers and illegal workers. Since Ops Mega was launched in early July, morethan 19,000 illegal immigrants and 427 employers had been detained.

The department is moving towards digitalising its daily operations byintroducing online applications, as well as e-payment systems to reduce corruptionand abuse of power.

Ops Mega came after the E-card (enforcement card) registration ended on June30. The E-card programme was launched on February 15 as a temporaryconfirmation of employment for illegal workers from 15 countries, includingVietnam.
It also aims to meet employers’ high demand for foreign workers afterthe Malaysian stopped brining in foreign labours. However, at the end of June30, many illegal foreign workers and employers have not registered for theprogramme, prompting the Malaysian Government to conduct the largest-ever OpsMega.-VNA
