Although explosive growth has been seen in 3Gsubscribers, there is still room for Vietnamese telecommunicationscompanies to promote 3G coverage. A survey conducted by GfK – a marketresearch company – revealed that 3G coverage among mobile users inHanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City was less than 50 percent.

Thesurvey also revealed that 67 percent of the respondents frequently use3G, mostly to read the news, look for information and log on to socialnetworks. The survey reported that 3G subscribers are expectingimprovements in transmission speed, wider coverage and internet pricediscounts.

By 2020, 3G and 4G technologies will be expandedwith 3G upgrades into 3.5G and 3.9G, said a representative from thetelecommunications company Qualcomm.

Meanwhile, HetNet, amulti-layered and extremely high capacity network, will be prioritisedin cities and densely populated areas with numerous obstacles to strongnetwork connections, such as high-storey buildings and large mobile usertraffic.

HetNet offers various technology including 3G, 4G andwifi, as well as a mixture of macro networks and Small Cells- a solutionto increase data capacity and provide coverage in buildings andshopping centres.

Experts believed that HetNetwould be relevant in every telecommunications market as data servicedemand is expected to skyrocket. Currently, 50 percent of the networksworldwide are implementing a multi-layered system while Vietnam beginsthe switch from 2G to 3G.

In a bid to increase network quality, providers need to apply App Coverage indexes evaluating network qualityto map out a plan and build a network. In addition, Small Cellsinstalment should be used increase 3G service quality.

Networkquality for video applications is expected to be a future focal point,as they currently make up 45 percent of the total data flow and thefigure is expected to reach 60 percent by 2020.-VNA

The networks bring together universities, research institutes and domestic and foreign businesses. Members will work closely in training, research, and technology transfer by sharing curricula, improving faculty capacity, providing access to laboratories and research facilities, and jointly implementing science and technology projects.

Vietnam is actively yet cautiously preparing for the construction of its first nuclear power plant in Ninh Thuan (now the south-central coastal province of Khanh Hoa). The resumption of the programme after years of suspension carries considerable significance for the nation’s development in a new era as it strives to gradually reduce and ultimately phase out coal-fired power to realise the Government’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050.

Vietnam has issued many key policies to support semiconductor development, notably the Politburo’s Resolution 57 on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. Other initiatives include the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050, and the Human Resources Development Programme for the Semiconductor Industry.
