Mekong Delta connectivity project starts

A project on connectivity for the central area of the Mekong Delta officially started with the signing of a technical consultancy service contract in Hanoi on October 18.

In thefirst phase, the project will build the six-lane Cao Lanh Bridgecrossing the Tien River and approaching roads with a total length of7.8km; the Vam Cong Bridge crossing the Hau River with a length of 5.8km and six lanes; and a 15.7km six-lane road connecting the two bridges.

The phase has a total investment of 751 millionUSD funded by the Australian Agency for International Development(AusAid), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and capital from theVietnamese Government.

According to DeputyMinister of Transport Ngo Thinh Duc, once completed, the two bridges andthe linking road will benefit 170,000 people travelling on this routeevery day and 3 million residents in three provinces of An Giang, CanTho and Dong Thap.

The project will also improve the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta’s southeast areas, he said./.
