A Mid-Autumn journey through five mountainous communes along the Ho Chi Minh Road is being held from September 20-21 to raise public awareness of the responsibility to care for children, especially those in poor and remote areas. Students at schools in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri province were presented with 15,000 notebooks, hundreds of textbooks, clothes and other school equipment.
The organisation board - the Central Council of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organisation and the Vietnam Children Support and Development Centre – also donated the necessary materials for a vegetable garden to each school in an effort to improve student meal quality. On September 19, the board held an event in Hanoi to gather gifts and raise funds for children in need during the traditional festival, which falls in the middle of the eighth month of the lunar calendar each year.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 orphaned, disabled and impoverished children in the central province of Dong Nai celebrated the Mid-Autumn festival early during a programme on September 20. The programme’s cost, 800 million VND (35,600 USD), was raised by staff at the Tin Nghia company. More than 1,000 gifts and moon cakes were presented to the children along with 10,000 notebooks. Participating children also had a chance to take part in traditional games and enjoy performances by artists from Ho Chi Minh City.-VNA
