Military icons sculpted into statues

Figurines of four eminent Vietnamese generals, namely Ly Thuong Kiet, Tran Quoc Tuan, Nguyen Hue and Vo Nguyen Giap, were unveiled to the public during a ceremony in Hanoi last weekend.

Thefigurines are part of a project titled Vietnam’s Eminent Generalsjointly organised by Heritage Inns and Circle Group in collaborationwith the Vietnam History Association and UNESCO.

The projectaims to commemorate the legendary generals in an effort to recognisethousands who have served in Vietnam’s 4000-year history.

Large statues of Tran Quoc Tuan and Nguyen Hue already stand in NamDinh and Hanoi, and were used to model the smaller duplicates.

According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism VuongDuy Bien, the production of the statues as special gifts will cement theimportance of the national heroes in daily life.

The samplesof Ly Thuong Kiet and General Vo Nguyen Giap have already been shown toexperts and the public for review. They are scheduled for an officialintroduction on the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory inMay 2014.

The figurines will be made from differentmaterials including bronze, stone and plaster, white sculptors arereportedly working to ensure that the statues resemble their real lifecounterparts and convey the spirit of the illustrious quartet.-VNA

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
