Myanmar: Thousands forced to flee by floods

Floods hit eight regions and states in Myanmar recently as a result of heavy rains, forcing at least 9,420 households to evacuate, the Myanmar Disaster Management Department announced on July 25.

Hanoi (VNA) – Floods hit eightregions and states in Myanmar recently as a result of heavy rains, forcing atleast 9,420 households to evacuate, the Myanmar Disaster Management Department announcedon July 25.

The flood submerged the houses and rescueand relief operations were underway in affected locations, said director of thedepartment Daw Phyu Lei Lei Tun.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare,Relief and Resettlement is also coordinating with the region and stategovernments to distribute rice and other aid to the flood victims.

During the monsoon season from June toSeptember, flash floods and landslides occur frequently in Myanmar, accompaniedby heavy rains and strong winds, especially in hilly areas and low-lying areas.

The country is listed among countries mostaffected by severe climate. In 2015, more than 100 people were killed andhundreds of thousands others had to evacuate because of flooding.-VNA
