NA Chairwoman meets Speaker of Thai Senate in Bangkok

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has suggested that the Vietnamese and Thai legislatures should enhance cooperation to match the strategic partnership of the two countries.

Bangkok (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hassuggested that the Vietnamese and Thai legislatures should enhance cooperationto match the strategic partnership of the two countries.

Duringa meeting with Speaker of the Thai Senate Pornpetch Wichitcholchai in Bangkokon August 27, Chairwoman Ngan spoke highly of the two countries’ cooperationand mutual support at multilateral forums, adding that people-to-peopleexchange will serve as a bridge to reinforce trust, understanding and closecollaboration between the two nations.

Vietnam’stop legislator said along with Thailand, Vietnam is an active and responsiblemember in the process of building an ASEAN Community of unity and sustainabledevelopment.

Sheexpressed her hope that the Thai Senate and parliaments of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA)’s memberstates would support Vietnam’s stance on the settlement of East Sea issue bypeaceful means in line with international law.

On the occasion, she also expressed her desire that theSpeaker of the Thai Senate will pay more attention to Thai people of Vietnameseorigin and the Thai government will grant citizenship to eligible overseas Vietnamesein Thailand, including those in old age.

As Vietnam and Thailand will convene a joint cabinet meetingin Hanoi in the near future, Ngan proposed that the parliaments of the twocountries support close liaison between the two governments and coordinate to monitorthe delivery of commitments made by both sides.

Wichitcholchai,for his part, welcomed the visit by the top Vietnamese legislator and herentourage to attend the 40th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-ParliamentaryAssembly (AIPA 40) in Thailand.  

He believed that as anon-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020 – 2021tenure and Chair of the AIPA 41 in 2020, Vietnam will make importantcontributions to friendship among regional countries in such positions.

Thailand alwayssupports Vietnam in issues of shared interest, including issues at sea andother fields, he said.

The host thanked NAChairwoman Ngan for inviting delegations from the Thai Senate, House ofRepresentatives, and Thailand – Vietnam friendship parliamentarians’ group to visitVietnam, adding that the Thai Senate is willing to welcome delegations from theVietnamese NA to share law making experience, thus further contributing tobilateral links.

He affirmed that hisoffice is always ready to receive the Vietnamese Ambassador to discuss and promptlydeal with issues related to overseas Vietnamese in Thailand.

The Thai SenateSpeaker also said Thailand supports and is willing to share experience withVietnam in its capacity as Chair of AIPA 41.-VNA
