National Steering Committee for implementing commitment on climate change established

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 21 signed a decision approving the establishment of a National Steering Committee for implementing Vietnam's commitments at the the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Hanoi (VNA) - Prime Minister PhamMinh Chinh on December 21 signed a decision approving the establishment of aNational Steering Committee for implementing Vietnam's commitments at the  the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

PM Chinh is the head ofthe Steering Committee, while Deputy PM Le Van Thanh is the deputy head of the committee.

The Steering Committeeis an inter-sectoral organization, performing the function ofhelping the Prime Minister to research, direct, coordinate, and handle importantinterdisciplinary work related to the implementation of Vietnam's commitmentsat COP26.

The Steering Committeeis also tasked with helping strengthen coordination of climate changeresponse activities among ministries, sectors and localities, and cooperationbetween Vietnam and international organizations, development partners andcountries.

The Steering Committee will review and fine-tune relevant mechanisms, policies, laws, strategies, plans; promoteadministrative reform to create a favourable environment; and attract investmentin developing infrastructure to respond to climate change.

It will also direct the implementation ofprogrammes, projects and prioritized tasks to respond to climate change, andpromote energy transformation in order to fulfill Vietnam's commitments atCOP26.

The Ministry of NaturalResources and Environment is the standing body of the Steering Committee./.

Vietnam contributes to international court's advꦰisory opiniꦗon on climate change

As a key member of the core group of 18 countries, initiated by Vanuatu, Vietnam engaged in advocating for the UN General Assembly’s Resolution N.77/276, requesting for the ICJ’s advisory opinion. Following the resolution's adoption, Vietnam fully participated in all procedural steps for the first time, from submitting written proposals to presenting directly at the court’s hearings.

Hanoi to roll out policies supporting green transport trans💃ition

Under the plan, from 2025 to 2026, the city will complete mechanisms and policies to support businesses in switching to green vehicles, expand the electric and green-energy bus network, and build charging stations. The targeted proportion of green buses is set at 10% in 2025 and 20–23% in 2026.
